It seems to be a little harder to switch jobs as we age. Some companies would hire younger talent who they can train to do things their way, and also who they can probably pay less. Maybe some other companies feel as if younger people have training that is more up to date. However, if you are over 50 and looking for a new career, do not give up because you can still make a great change these days. Here is my take on some over 50 career change jobs!
The types of jobs I would consider good candidates for a middle aged job seeker to look at would pay decently, because after all, we have people to take care of at our age! They would also have a good growth history, and also would not require a lot of retraining. After all, we do not usually have time to spend four years in medical school! Usually at over 50 we need to work now.
But also, I think middle aged people have grown and want a couple more things in their new job. Career changers over 50 are looking for meaning, and so we looked at meaningfulness. Many older job seekers also desire some job flexibility because they are looking for time to take care of other obligations like care for children and aging parents.
Public School Teacher: Summers off and many school districts offer non-traditional paths to a teacher’s certification, especially in those hot areas where they really need teachers.
Non-Profit Company Manager: If you have management experience, a job at a non-profit organization can be just the boost you are looking for. The pay may be less than other sectors, but not always, and you’ll feel good about what you do!
Financial Advisor/Insurance Agent: You need to obtain a license to perform these jobs, but it is usually does not take that long. If you like sales then this may be your ticket to making a decent income with flexible hours. Many insurance agents work out of their home office.
Patient Representative: Many hospitals are hiring people to go between the medical professionals and the patients and families. Busy docs do not have time to explain procedures, or perhaps do not have a talent for making themselves understood by non-medical people.
